Sneaker Style: Metallic Gold Air Max 97’s
Allow me to begin by saying that I was never a sneaker type of girl growing up. In fact, it wasn’t until summer of 2017 that I purchased a pair of sneakers for style purposes completely separate from exercise. I’m not entirely sure when the Air Max 97’s caught my eye but I do know that by the end of April 2018, I was convinced that I had to own them.
They were sold out pretty much EVERYWHERE I went but, of course, I refused to give up on these shoes.
Also worth noting: I never buy shoes that aren’t black. I don’t do this on purpose but rather, I just find I always choose black because it is the most versatile and can be worn many times without anyone noticing. When you’re trying to look great on a budget, purchasing pieces with this mindset becomes inherent. Nonetheless, once I decided that the metallic gold was the dopest colorway available, I refused to retreat to my old, colorless ways despite my fear that I wouldn’t be able to style these shoes.
I scoured Pinterest (for much longer than I’d like to admit) trying to find outfit inspiration for how to wear these shoes. Very few examples of this specific colorway came up. Pretty weird, kind of frustrating, but I would not be discouraged. I was determined to buy these shoes and wear them multiple ways to prove to myself that color is cool and wearable for me and all my other “broke” college girls.
Finally, I stumbled upon this website called StockX.com which allows people to buy and sell sneakers, watches, designer handbags, and streetwear that is sometimes sold out at most major retailers.
I purchased the shoe in a 6.5Y ( I’m normally an 8 in women’s sizing) and I’m so pleased with my purchase despite that fact the shoes run a little small. Here’s my first attempt at styling them…
Of course, when styling any outfit, I begin with a staple or “centerpiece” around which all other pieces should complement. In this case, I wanted to create a very subtle but eye-catching canvas upon which these beautiful sneakers could shine.
I began this canvas with this gorgeous distressed denim jacket from Boohoo.com
Underneath, I kept it very simple with this white tank top from Target. I chose white rather than black just to brighten up the top half of the look and balance out the loud gold color of the shoes on the bottom half.
Continuing with the distressed theme of the jacket, I added this incredibly distressed high-waisted boyfriend jeans that I found on the clearance rack at Target for ONLY $12.48. (You stan a discount queen)
And we cannot forget accessories…
Right Arm Candy: Alex and Ani; H Initial Charm Bangle in Rafaelian Gold (no longer sold), Number 3 Charm Bangle, O initial Charm Bangle in Rafaelian Gold (no longer sold), and New Beginnings Charm Bangle (no longer sold)
Left Arm Candy: Michael Kors watch from TJMaxx for $100, originally priced at $250. (You stan a what? Discount Queen); Bangle from Charming Charlie
Bag of the Day: Embroidered Crossbody bag from Target (no longer sold).
This is really my go-to everyday bag. However, I like it especially for this look because the red flower embroidery adds a touch of femininity to a very grunge and boyish look.
